Reykjavík Energy (RE) is among the largest companies in Iceland. Therefore, RE's performance in terms of environmental issues is of vital importance. The operations of RE are certified according to the ISO 14001 environmental management system, and RE regularly submits environmental reports to the Public Health Authority, the National Energy Authority, and the Environment Agency, all of which are licensing and monitoring authorities. Taking good care of the environment is a group effort, as it is necessary to combine practical know-how with ingenuity to reduce the carbon footprint. The chapters dealing with environmental issues describe the main actions to reduce Reykjavík Energy’s negative impact on the environment in a cost-effective way and at the same time improve the quality of life of the companies’ customers.
